MATILA PRIVACY POLICY
Effective Date: 16 November 2026
Last Updated: 16 November 2026
1. Introduction
Welcome to Matila (“Matila”, “we”, “our” or “us”).
Matila is a college-focused social matching and anonymous chatting application operated by Hardik Jumnani, an individual developer based in India.
Matila enables eligible college students to discover compatible students, participate in time-limited text conversations, and mutually choose whether to reveal their identities, extend a conversation or end it.
We understand that privacy, identity protection and trust are especially important in an application involving anonymous conversations and personal relationships. This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, how we use and protect it, when it may be disclosed, and the choices available to you.
By using Matila, you acknowledge that you have been provided access to this Privacy Policy. Where consent is required by applicable law, we will seek that consent in the manner required by law. Merely using the application does not replace any consent that must be obtained separately.
Please read this Policy together with Matila's Community Guidelines and any applicable in-app notices.
2. Who Is Responsible for Your Data?
Matila is operated by:
Name: Hardik Jumnani
Role: Individual developer and operator of Matila
Email: support@matila.in
Website: https://matila.in
Privacy Policy: https://matila.in/privacy
For privacy questions, requests to access or correct information, account deletion, or complaints about our handling of personal information, contact us at the email address above.
3. Who Can Use Matila?
Matila is initially intended for eligible students aged 16 and above who have a valid college email address from a college approved for participation in Matila.
Access may initially be limited to selected colleges in Bengaluru, India. We may expand to additional colleges and locations over time.
You must provide accurate information about yourself, including your date of birth, during onboarding.
Age restrictions and minors: Individuals under 18 may be subject to additional legal protections under applicable Indian data-protection law. Matila will only onboard users under 18 where legally permitted and after implementing any consent and safeguards required by applicable law. Until those requirements have been verified and implemented, onboarding for users under 18 must remain disabled.
We may restrict, suspend or terminate access where we reasonably believe that a user is ineligible, has misrepresented their age or student status, or has violated our Community Guidelines.
4. Personal Information We Collect
We collect information that you provide directly, information generated through your use of Matila, and limited technical information generated by the services that support the application.
4.1 Registration and account information
When you register or onboard, we may collect:
- Full name.
- Date of birth.
- Gender, selected from the options provided in the application.
- Gender preference for matching.
- Intent preference, such as relationship, casual interaction or friendship.
- College email address.
- Student ID information submitted for verification.
- Account identifiers generated through Firebase Authentication.
- Login records, timestamps and information needed to manage your account.
We use this information to create your account, verify eligibility, support matching, maintain account security and operate Matila.
4.2 College and identity verification
Matila uses a college email address, student ID information and a gesture selfie to help verify that users are eligible students.
You may be asked to take a live selfie while performing a specified gesture. A member of the Matila team reviews the submitted image for verification purposes.
We store verification selfies in Firebase Storage and retain them until account deletion, subject to the limited retention exceptions described in this Policy.
Matila does not currently use facial recognition, automated face matching, liveness-detection technology or biometric-template generation as part of this process.
Your verification information is used for eligibility and identity-verification purposes. We do not share student lists or verification information with college administrators as part of our ordinary operations.
4.3 Profile photographs
Matila collects a profile photograph separately from the verification selfie. Both are stored in Firebase Storage.
Your profile photograph is used in the identity-reveal process described below. It is not ordinarily displayed to your match during the anonymous chatting phase.
4.4 Matching preferences and decisions
We collect your gender preference and interaction-intent preference to match you with eligible students.
We may also record information about your use of matching features, including:
- Matches and conversation records.
- Your decisions to reveal, use Safe Reveal, extend or end a conversation.
- Payment status for a mutually selected action.
- Whether a reveal or extension was completed.
- Information required to prevent duplicate or inconsistent transactions.
Matching preferences are used for matching students and are not intended for advertising or marketing.
4.5 Chat messages
Matila supports text-based conversations between matched users.
We collect and store chat messages and related conversation information so that the messaging feature can operate, users can access their conversation history where available, and reports of misconduct can be investigated.
We do not currently offer image messaging, video messaging, voice notes or audio calls within the chat feature.
4.6 Reports and moderation information
If you report another user, or another user reports you, we may collect and retain information necessary to assess the report and address misconduct. This may include account details, relevant messages, conversation records, report descriptions, timestamps and the outcome of an investigation.
We may use this information to enforce our Community Guidelines, protect users, prevent abuse and comply with applicable legal obligations.
4.7 Purchases and virtual coins
Matila offers paid features, including identity reveals, Safe Reveal, conversation extensions and in-app coins that can be used for eligible features.
We may maintain records of purchases, transaction identifiers, coin balances, the feature purchased, payment confirmation status and related account activity.
Payments are processed through Google Play's billing system on Android and Apple's in-app purchase system on iOS. We do not directly collect or store your full payment card credentials through Matila's own payment systems.
Google and Apple may process payment and transaction information under their respective terms and privacy policies.
4.8 Technical and diagnostic information
We use Firebase and related Google services to operate, maintain and secure Matila.
Depending on the service and its configuration, technical information may include:
- Firebase account and authentication identifiers.
- Push notification tokens.
- Login timestamps and account activity records.
- App crash reports and diagnostic information.
- App performance and usage analytics.
- Security and app-integrity information generated through Firebase App Check.
- Technical records required to operate backend functions.
We use Firebase Cloud Messaging to send push notifications. Notifications are designed to be generic and are not intended to display chat contents, another user's identity or your matching preferences on your device's lock screen.
The exact technical information processed may depend on the Firebase products enabled, their configuration and the permissions you grant.
5. How We Use Your Information
We use personal information for the following purposes:
- Account creation and authentication: To register users and authenticate access through supported college-email sign-in methods.
- College eligibility verification: To review college email addresses, student ID information and verification selfies.
- Matching: To match eligible students using their stated preferences and the matching criteria provided by Matila.
- Anonymous chatting: To enable text conversations between matched users.
- Conversation decisions: To record and implement decisions to reveal identities, use Safe Reveal, extend a conversation or end it.
- Identity disclosure: To disclose limited profile information when the required mutual-consent conditions are met.
- Purchases and virtual coins: To process feature purchases, maintain coin balances and apply payments to the selected outcome.
- Notifications: To send generic operational notifications.
- Safety and moderation: To investigate reports, enforce Community Guidelines, prevent misuse and protect users.
- Security and reliability: To detect technical errors, maintain app integrity, troubleshoot crashes and protect accounts.
- Legal compliance: To respond to valid legal requests and meet applicable legal obligations.
- User support: To respond to privacy requests, account issues, complaints and other support enquiries.
We do not sell personal information to third parties. We do not use matching preferences for advertising, and Matila does not currently display third-party advertisements.
6. Anonymous Chatting and Identity Reveals
6.1 Anonymity during conversations
Matila is designed to let users chat without immediately revealing their real identities to their matches.
However, anonymous chatting does not mean that Matila itself lacks identifying information. We collect registration and verification information, and authorised access to that information may be necessary to operate the service, verify eligibility, investigate reports or comply with the law.
Your full name, college email address, student ID and verification selfie are not ordinarily shown to your match during the anonymous chatting phase.
6.2 Mutual Reveal
During the decision phase, both users may choose an available outcome.
If both users agree to a reveal and the required payment conditions are completed, Matila discloses the users' full names and profile photographs to each other.
A user's decision to reveal does not independently authorise disclosure if the other user has not also agreed.
6.3 Safe Reveal
Safe Reveal is an optional feature available to eligible users under the rules presented in the application.
Both users must agree to Safe Reveal. Once the required agreement and payment conditions are satisfied, the female user is shown the male user's full name and profile photograph first.
The female user may then decide whether to disclose her own identity. She may decline without revealing her own full name or profile photograph through this feature.
Safe Reveal does not override the requirement for mutual agreement to enter the feature.
6.4 Conversation extensions and endings
Users may mutually choose to extend a conversation or end it, subject to the available options and any applicable payment conditions.
Ending a conversation means that the users will not be matched with each other again under Matila's current matching rules. Matila does not currently offer a separate blocking feature.
6.5 Your responsibility after a reveal
Once another user is shown your name and profile photograph, that user may remember, copy or otherwise use the information outside Matila. We cannot guarantee that another user will not take screenshots, make notes or share information independently.
We encourage users to disclose only information they are comfortable sharing and to report suspected misuse through the available reporting feature.
7. Chat Storage and Retention
Chat conversations initially operate within a 48-hour conversation period. After that period, conversations become read-only unless the users complete an eligible extension.
Read-only does not necessarily mean deleted. Messages and related records may remain stored after the conversation becomes read-only.
We retain chat records for the operation of the service, user access to conversation history where supported, moderation and investigation of reports, security and compliance with applicable law.
When an account is deleted, associated chat messages and other account data will be deleted as described in Section 11, subject to applicable legal requirements and the limited investigation-related retention described there.
8. In-App Purchases and Coins
8.1 Available purchases
Depending on the features available in the app, users may purchase an individual reveal, Safe Reveal, a conversation extension or in-app coins that can be used for eligible actions.
8.2 Separate payments
For a mutually selected paid outcome, each user must complete their own required payment or confirmation process. One user's payment does not automatically satisfy the other user's payment requirement.
If one user pays but the other user does not complete the required payment or confirmation, the first user's paid amount will be converted into an equivalent in-app coin balance under the applicable transaction rules. Those coins can be used for eligible future purchases.
The app will present the relevant price, purchase option and confirmation flow before a transaction is completed.
8.3 Coin expiry and account closure
In-app coins do not have an expiry date while the account remains active.
Coins are not returned merely because an account is deleted or banned. Any refund rights required by applicable law or the relevant app-store payment rules remain unaffected.
8.4 Payment processors
Google Play and Apple process payments through their respective systems. Their handling of payment information is governed by their applicable terms and privacy policies.
Matila may receive transaction confirmations, product information, purchase status, transaction identifiers or related records necessary to fulfil purchases and maintain accurate coin balances.
For questions about payment processing or refund requests, users may also need to contact the relevant app-store provider.
9. Cookies, Advertising and Tracking
Matila is a mobile application and does not currently display third-party advertisements.
We use Firebase Analytics and diagnostic services for app operation, usage analysis, crash reporting and service improvement. These services may use identifiers or similar technical mechanisms as configured.
We do not use gender preferences or interaction-intent preferences for advertising.
This Policy does not imply that the app or its service providers collect no technical identifiers. Actual collection depends on the enabled services and their configuration.
10. When We Share Information
We do not sell your personal information. We do not provide colleges or college administrators with information about students' use of Matila as part of our ordinary operations.
We may share information in the following limited circumstances.
10.1 With your matched user
We disclose your full name and profile photograph when the applicable Mutual Reveal or Safe Reveal process authorises that disclosure.
10.2 With service providers
We use third-party services to operate Matila, including Firebase services provided by Google and the billing systems provided by Google Play and Apple.
These providers may process information needed for authentication, storage, push notifications, analytics, crash diagnostics, app integrity, backend functions and payment processing.
They process information according to the services provided, their contractual arrangements with us, their applicable privacy terms and the law. Their involvement does not mean that Matila sells your information.
10.3 For safety, investigations and legal compliance
We may disclose information where reasonably necessary to investigate abuse, enforce our Community Guidelines, protect users, address fraud or security incidents, or comply with a valid legal obligation, court order or request from a legally authorised authority.
We intend to disclose only information we are legally required or otherwise lawfully permitted to disclose. Where legally permitted and appropriate, we will assess the scope and validity of a request before responding.
10.4 Business transfers
If Matila is involved in a merger, acquisition, restructuring or transfer of business assets, relevant information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to applicable law and appropriate safeguards.
10.5 No routine college sharing
We do not routinely share user profiles, chat messages, gender preferences, identity-verification selfies or matching activity with colleges or college administrators.
11. Data Retention and Account Deletion
11.1 Account deletion requests
You may initiate account deletion through the account-deletion option in the Matila app's settings.
You may also contact support@matila.in to request deletion.
We aim to acknowledge or confirm receipt of a deletion request within seven business days. This is a confirmation target, not a promise that all data will be deleted within seven business days.
We will process deletion requests and delete associated account information in accordance with this Policy and applicable law.
11.2 Data deleted
When an account is deleted, we intend to delete personal information associated with the account, including, as applicable:
- Account and profile information.
- College email and student-verification information.
- Verification selfies and profile photographs stored in Firebase Storage.
- Chat messages and associated conversation records.
- Matching preferences and matching history.
- Identity-reveal and conversation-decision records.
- Push notification tokens and account-linked technical information.
- Coin balances and other account-linked feature information.
Some technical records, transaction records or other information may need to be retained for a limited period where required by law or reasonably necessary for a permitted purpose, as explained below.
11.3 Reports and investigations
Where an account is subject to an active report, safety investigation or relevant misconduct complaint, Matila may retain information reasonably necessary to investigate and resolve the matter.
Our current intended retention period for account data associated with such matters is up to 60 days following the account-deletion request.
If a serious investigation remains unresolved beyond that period, we may retain only the information reasonably necessary to comply with a lawful request, legal hold or other applicable legal obligation. Such retention will be limited to what is necessary and permitted by law.
We will not use this exception as a general reason to retain all deleted account information indefinitely.
11.4 Legal and transaction records
Certain transaction, security or legal-compliance records may be retained for the period required by applicable law or necessary to establish, exercise or defend legal claims. Where possible, retained records will be restricted from ordinary operational use.
11.5 Backups and technical logs
Information in backups or technical logs may not always be removed at the exact moment primary account records are deleted. Where residual copies remain, they should be protected and deleted or overwritten according to the applicable retention process, subject to legal requirements.
Matila will not retain information longer than reasonably necessary for the purposes stated in this Policy, except where a longer period is legally permitted or required.
11.6 Effect of deletion on coins and purchases
Account deletion removes access to the account and its associated benefits. Unused coins are not returned on account deletion or account bans, subject to applicable law and mandatory refund requirements.
Deleting your Matila account does not itself cancel any separate subscription or payment arrangement managed by an app-store provider. Matila currently intends to offer feature purchases and coins rather than subscriptions, but users should manage any applicable recurring billing directly through the relevant provider.
12. Your Privacy Rights and Choices
Depending on applicable law, you may have rights to request information about your personal data, seek correction or updating of inaccurate information, request deletion, withdraw consent where processing relies on consent, and raise grievances concerning the handling of your personal data.
You can contact support@matila.in to exercise these rights or ask a question about the information associated with your account.
12.1 Access and correction
Certain personal information, including registration details, may not be editable directly after onboarding.
If your name, date of birth, college information or other personal details are inaccurate, contact support so we can review your request and take appropriate action where correction is permitted.
Matching preferences may be changed through the features available in the app.
12.2 Withdrawal of consent
Where processing relies on your consent, you may contact us to withdraw that consent. Withdrawal may affect our ability to provide features that require the relevant information.
Withdrawing consent does not make earlier lawful processing unlawful, and it does not prevent processing that may be permitted or required on another lawful basis.
12.3 Complaints
You may submit privacy complaints to support@matila.in. We will review complaints and respond in accordance with applicable law and our support procedures.
Where applicable law provides access to an external grievance or regulatory mechanism, this Policy does not limit your ability to use it.
13. Data Security
We take reasonable technical and organisational measures designed to protect personal information against unauthorised access, alteration, disclosure, loss or misuse.
Matila uses Firebase services for account authentication, data storage, notifications, diagnostics, app integrity and backend operations. Access to the Firebase project is restricted to the developer.
Security measures may include access restrictions, service security rules, authentication controls, secure data transmission and other protections appropriate to the information processed.
No method of electronic storage or transmission is completely secure. We therefore cannot guarantee absolute security, but we intend to take reasonable steps to protect user information and address security issues.
If a personal-data breach occurs, we will assess the incident and provide notifications to affected users and relevant authorities where required by applicable law.
14. Data Location and International Processing
Matila's data is intended to be hosted in India, based on the current Firebase project configuration.
However, third-party providers may process certain technical, diagnostic, authentication, payment or support information in other locations depending on their service architecture and applicable arrangements.
Where personal information is transferred or processed outside India, we will do so subject to applicable legal requirements and any restrictions or safeguards that apply.
15. Children's Privacy and Age-Related Safeguards
Matila is intended for eligible users aged 16 and above. Because individuals under 18 may be treated as children under applicable Indian law, Matila must assess and comply with the legal requirements applicable to their personal information before accepting such users.
Where required, Matila will implement verifiable parental or guardian consent and appropriate safeguards, or restrict access to users for whom those requirements cannot be met.
We do not intend to knowingly process children's personal information in a manner prohibited by applicable law.
If you believe that a person has provided personal information in violation of applicable age requirements, please contact support@matila.in so we can investigate and take appropriate action.
16. Community Guidelines and User Conduct
Matila expects users to treat one another respectfully and to use the app responsibly.
Users must not use Matila to harass, threaten, impersonate, stalk, exploit or unlawfully harm another person. Users must not misuse information obtained through an identity reveal or share another person's personal information without appropriate permission or lawful authority.
Matila may review reports, investigate suspected misconduct and restrict or terminate accounts where appropriate.
Matila currently does not offer a separate blocking feature. Under its current matching rules, users who end a conversation will not be matched with that same person again.
Detailed behavioural requirements and enforcement procedures will be set out in the Community Guidelines, which should be made available to users before launch.
17. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy when our features, data practices, legal obligations or business operations change.
When we make material changes, we intend to notify users through an appropriate in-app notice or email, where available and appropriate. We will update the effective date or last-updated date at the beginning of the Policy.
Where a change requires renewed consent under applicable law, we will seek that consent before carrying out the relevant processing.
We encourage you to review this Policy periodically to remain informed about how Matila handles personal information.
